The E5 European long distance path or E5 path is one of the European long-distance paths from the French Atlantic coast in Brittany through Switzerland, Austria and Germany over the Alps to Venice in Italy. It is waymarked over the whole 3200 km (1988 mi) distance. The heaviest used section is the last part, which crosses Europe’s highest mountains from Lake Constance to Italy (600 km, around 30 days). Even this part does not require climbing experience.

La parte più comunemente percorsa è quella che dal lago di Costanza raggiunge Verona: un percorso di 600 km per il quale sono mediamente necessari per un buon camminatore circa 30 giorni di cammino. Tale tratto fu definito da Hans Schmidt di Sonthofen e realizzato interconnettendo sentieri esistenti dalla che lo inaugurò il 2 luglio 1972. Nonostante il sentiero attraversi anche zone rocciose con alte cime, non è necessaria alcuna esperienza di scalata e lungo il percorso vi sono diverse possibilità di riparo e pernottamento tipicamente in rifugi alpini. Dit gedeelte van ongeveer twee weken doorkruist de Alpen van noord naar zuid en komt op zijn hoogste punt zelfs op bijna 3000 meter hoogte. De horeca in met name het Italiaanse (Duitstalige) deel is zeer ingesteld op E5-wandelaars. Op enkele plaatsen is de route "subtiel" omgelegd. (nl)
