The image sparked several internet memes, both supportive and mocking, and fuelled a debate about the lengths to which politicians attempt to control their public image, as well as drawing criticism that the focus placed on the image and its resulting memes was motivated by antisemitism. Miliband dismissed the debate as unimportant. Others, including opponents, described the media focus as unfair or part of a wider negative personality-based media campaign.
