The season 2008/09 was the sixth year under the title Elite One Championship the top level rugby league competition in France. The season ran from October to May. Ten clubs competed for the title playing 20 rounds in the league before the top five progressed to the end of season play-offs. UTC who had finished 5th were not allowed to take their place in the play-offs, their place was given to Carpentras. Pia XIII were beaten by Lézignan Sangliers in a repeat of the previous two finals, and AS Carcassonne knocked out RC Carpentras XIII. At the second stage Lezignan shocked league leaders Limoux Grizzlies 20-18 away to reach the final in the other game AS Carcassonne eliminated Pia. In the elimination final Limoux thrashed AS Carcassonne 41-16. The final was held at Carcassonne's Stade Alber

At the other end of the table Lyon Villeurbanne XIII were relegated. In the Lord Derby cup final AS Carcassonne beat Limoux Grizzlies to complete a winless campaign for Limoux. (en)
- Le championnat de France Élite 2008-09 oppose pour la saison 2008-2009 les dix meilleures équipes françaises de rugby à XIII à l'exception de deux équipes françaises: les Dragons Catalans qui sont en Super League Europe et le Toulouse Olympique XIII qui est en Co-operative Championship (anti-chambre de la Super League). Le championnat débute le 11 octobre 2008 pour s'achever par une finale fixée le 16 ou 17 mai 2009. Il y a tout d'abord dix-huit journées avant les play-offs et également deux autres journées appelées "Extragames" qui consistent à faire disputer tous les matchs d'une même journée le même jour au même endroit (l'une le 14 décembre 2008, la seconde le 21 mars 2009), ensuite les play-offs qui sont disputés par les cinq meilleures équipes à l'issue de la saison régulière et se déroulent sur un système qui est expérimenté pour la première fois en Élite (au premier tour des play-offs, le 3e reçoit le 4e (match 1), le 2e reçoit le 5e (match 2), au second tour le 1er reçoit le vainqueur du match 1 (match 3), celui qui gagne se qualifie pour la finale, le vainqueur du match 2 reçoit le vaincu du match 1 (match 4), enfin au troisième tour le vaincu du match 3 affrontera le vainqueur du match 4 pour la seconde place en finale). Certains joueurs manquent le début de saison avec leurs clubs en raison de leur participation à la Coupe du monde 2008 qui se déroule à partir du 26 octobre 2008 en Australie. Le championnat de France de rugby à XIII de première division porte le nom d'Élite. Alors qu'il était composé de onze clubs la saison 2007-2008, il fut resserré à dix clubs en 2008-2009 après le retrait d'Albi XIII en raison de problèmes financiers et le départ du Toulouse Olympique XIII qui a décidé de rejoindre la League One sans volonté de maintenir une équipe réserve dans le championnat de France, dans le même temps Avignon XIII est promu cette saison après homologation de son dossier de candidature auprès de la LER et marque ainsi son retour dans l'Élite après l'avoir quitté en 2002.
