Um dia Balor recebe uma profecia que dizia que seria morto por seu neto, sendo assim ele prende sua filha em uma torre de cristal junto com outras doze donzelas, para que ela nunca conhecesse um homem. Cian escala a torre a fim de tomá-la como vingança por Balor ter roubado seu gado, e da união de Cian com Ethniu nascem três crianças. Balor ordena que elas sejam afogadas, mas uma das crianças não cai no mar. Essa criança viria a ser Lugh. (pt)

* Im Lebor Gabala Eirenn („Das Buch der Landnahmen Irlands“) gilt sie durch Elatha als die Mutter des Dagda und Ogmas, sowie Delbaeths.
* Ethniu ist die Tochter der Formoren Balor und Cethlionn und somit die Mutter Lughs und die Großmutter Abhcans.
* Auch Etan, die Tochter Dian Cechts, wird als Abhcans Großmutter erwähnt, es ist nicht sicher, ob damit die gleiche Sagenfigur gemeint ist.
* Étaín heißt die Tochter Tuirenns, ebenfalls eine mögliche Form des Namens Ethne/Eithne.
* In der Sage Esnada Tige Buchet trägt die Tochter des Königs Cathair Mór und Gattin Cormac mac Airts den Namen Eithne Tháebfhota.

- Nella mitologia irlandese, Ethniu (antico irlandese /ˈeθʲnʲu/, Eithne /ˈehnʲə/; o anche Ethliu, Ethlinn, e una serie di altre pronunce – vedi sotto) era la figlia di Balor, re dei Fomoriani. Ethniu è una figura centrale nella mitologia irlandese in quanto molti dei ed eroi sono collegati ad essa. Suo marito era Cian, figlio di Dian Cecht anche se secondo alcune versioni il suocero di Eithnu era Dagda. I suoi figli furono Lugh Lámhfada e Delbáeth. I suoi nipoti erano Cúchulainn e Fionn mac Cumhail. A causa delle relazioni di Ethniu le tre razze differenti dei Fomoriani, Túatha Dé Danann e Milesi si unirono nei suoi discendenti. (it)
