Euthanasia in the Netherlands is regulated by the "Termination of Life on Request and Assisted Suicide (Review Procedures) Act" which was passed in 2001 and took effect in 2002. It states that euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide are not punishable if the attending physician acts in accordance with criteria of due care. These criteria concern the patient's request, the patient's suffering (unbearable and hopeless), the information provided to the patient, the absence of reasonable alternatives, consultation of another physician and the applied method of ending life. To demonstrate their compliance, the Act requires physicians to report euthanasia to a review committee.

- Euthanasie in Nederland is geregeld in de wet Toetsing levensbeëindiging op verzoek en hulp bij zelfdoding. De wet is met een parlementaire meerderheid van D66, VVD en PvdA, vastgesteld op 12 april 2001. Een jaar later traden de wetsregels in werking, op 1 april 2002. De wet geldt uitsluitend voor gevallen van actieve euthanasie, dus levensbeëindiging op verzoek en hulp bij zelfdoding - op uitdrukkelijk verzoek van de patiënt zélf. Euthanasie en hulp bij zelfdoding zijn ook na intreden van deze wet nog strafbaar (artikel 293 en 294 Wetboek van Strafrecht), maar uitsluitend een arts die de zorgvuldigheidseisen heeft nageleefd en de euthanasie of hulp bij zelfdoding heeft gemeld, kan met succes een beroep doen op de bijzondere strafuitsluitingsgrond die in eerstgenoemde wet beschreven staat.
