Son nom vient de l'arabe firdows qui signifie littéralement « le paradis ». En avril 2002, une statue de douze mètres de hauteur à l'effigie de Saddam Hussein est érigée en l'honneur de son 65e anniversaire. Le 9 avril 2003, des Irakiens, assistés par des Marines américains, renversent la statue. Aujourd'hui, une nouvelle sculpture surnommée « la sculpture verte », symbolisant la liberté, trône sur l'ancien socle. * Portail de l’architecture et de l’urbanisme * Portail de l’Irak * Portail des transports (fr) ساحة الفردوس في بغداد هي إحدى ساحات المدينة الرئيسة، وتقع الساحة في جهة الرصافة من ضفة نهر دجلة، ويطل فندقا عشتار (شيراتون) وفلسطين (ميريديان) على الساحة. وكذلك يطل على الساحة مبنى جامع 17 رمضان التاريخي، وبني في الساحة نصب الجندي المجهول في عهد الرئيس عبد الكريم قاسم، ولكنه هدم عام 1982م، حيث استبدل نصب الجندي المجهول بتمثال للرئيس صدام حسين بمناسبة عيد ميلادهِ ال65، ولقد بلغ طول التمثال حوالي 12 متر، وهدم التمثال عند غزو العراق في التاسع من نيسان /أبريل عام 2003م. Der Platz wird heute oft für Demonstrationen benutzt, liegt aber nicht unmittelbar im Regierungsviertel.
