François de La Vérendrye (1715 – July 31, 1794) was a Canadian explorer. He was the third son of Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, sieur de La Vérendrye. He was born at Sorel, New France in 1715 and was active in his father's trade activities from Fort Kaministiquia to the North Saskatchewan River. He was one of two brothers to use the title "Chevalier" the other being Louis-Joseph. This causes some confusion when reading English translations of journals of the time. In 1762 he became known as the Sieur du Tremblay. With his death, the name La Vérendrye disappeared.

In 1738 he was part of his father's expedition to Mandan country in what is now North Dakota. In 1739 he accompanied his brother, Louis-Joseph, and together they discovered the Saskatchewan River. In 1742–43, he and his brother traveled southwest through Mandan territory, probably reaching Wyoming and viewing the Rocky Mountains. They were the first Europeans to cross the northern Great Plains and reach the mountains. (See Verendrye Brothers' journey to the Rocky Mountains for details of the expedition.) Francois then returned east and served in the army during the Seven Years' War. He died on July 31, 1794, in Montreal. En 1739, il accompagne son frère, Louis-Joseph Gaultier de La Vérendrye, dans une nouvelle expédition le long de la rivière Saskatchewan. En 1742-1743, ils partent denouveau tous les deux en compagnie de deux autres français vers la rivière Missouri dans l'espoir de trouver la voie pour atteindre la mer occidentale. Ils découvrent les Montagnes Rocheuses. Mais les multiples conflits armés entre tribus amérindiennes les font rebrousser chemin et s'en retournent vers le Canada. Sur le retour, ils gravent une plaque de plomb sur laquelle ils rappellent leur mission et inscrivent leur nom. Ensuite ils enfouissent cette plaque à l'endroit où s'élèvera au siècle suivant Fort Pierre. En 1913, cette stèle sera redécouverte et permettra la création du site de La Vérendrye. Le 1er octobre 1750, il fut nommé cadet à l’aiguillette, dans les troupes de la Marine, par le gouverneur de la Nouvelle-France Jacques-Pierre de Taffanel de La Jonquière. De retour à Montréal, François participe à la guerre de Sept Ans. En 1761, à la mort de son frère Louis-Joseph, il demeure le seul héritier de la famille La Vérendrye. François meurt à Montréal le 30 juillet 1794. (fr)
