Het FMI werd opgericht in 1999 en verzorgt in samenwerking met de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen drie voortgezette kunstopleidingen: MFA Interactive Media and Environments (IME), MFA Schilderkunst (Painting) en MFA Theatervormgeving/Beeldregie (Scenography).
