- Franz Simandl (August 1, 1840 – December 15, 1912) was a Czech double-bassist and pedagogue most remembered for his book New Method for the Double Bass, known as the "Simandl book", which is to this day used as a standard study of double bass technique and hand positions. His approach uses the first, second, and fourth fingers of the left hand (the third and fourth operating together as one digit) for stopping the strings in the lower register of the instrument and divides the fingerboard into various positions. | - Franz Simandl (Blatná, 1 d'agost de 1840 - Viena, 13 de desembre de 1912) Va ser un contrabaixista i pedagog txec, més recordat pel seu llibre New Method for the Bass Bass, conegut com el llibre Simandl, que fins avui s'utilitza com a estudi estàndard de la tècnica de contrabaix i les posicions de mà. El seu enfocament utilitza el primer, segon i quart dit de la mà esquerra (el tercer i el quart funcionant junts com un dígit) per aturar les cordes al registre inferior de l'instrument i dividir el taulell de comandament en diverses posicions. El segon volum del mètode té en compte la utilització de la posició del polze utilitzant el dit polze, primer, segon i tercer dits, per interpretar a treballs en solitari, registre alt i dividir de nou la fitxa en un concepte de posicions. El segon volum també aprofundeix en la interpretació d'harmònics. El "Nou mètode" de Simandl, que ja té més d'un segle, és encara comú entre els contrabaixistes clàssics, tot i que el llibre en si és lentament substituït per mètodes més nous que incorporen la teoria pedagògica moderna. Es reconeixen modernes adaptacions, extensions i reptes a les doctrines de Simandl. Simandl va estudiar al Conservatori de Praga amb abans d'esdevenir el baixista principal de l'Orquestra de l'Òpera de la Cort de Viena. Va ser professor de contrabaix al Conservatori de Viena de 1869 a 1910. Entre els seus alumnes s'inclouen molts dels baixistes més importants de la seva època, com , que es va traslladar a la ciutat de Nova York convertint-se en el baix principal de la Filharmònica de Nova York i va ser un professor influent. El "arbre genealògic" de pedagogs de Simandl s'estén des de fa moltes generacions. - Franz Simandl (August 1, 1840 – December 15, 1912) was a Czech double-bassist and pedagogue most remembered for his book New Method for the Double Bass, known as the "Simandl book", which is to this day used as a standard study of double bass technique and hand positions. His approach uses the first, second, and fourth fingers of the left hand (the third and fourth operating together as one digit) for stopping the strings in the lower register of the instrument and divides the fingerboard into various positions. The second volume of the method looks at the use of thumb position using the thumb, first, second and third fingers, to play solo, high register work and again dividing the fingerboard up into a concept of positions. The second volume also delves extensively into the playing of harmonics. Simandl's "New Method" of playing, now over a century old, is still common among classical double bassists, although the book itself is slowly being replaced by newer methods which incorporate modern pedagogical theory. Modern adaptations of, extensions to, and challenges to Simandl doctrines are acknowledged. Simandl studied at the Prague Conservatory with before becoming the principal bassist in the Vienna Court Opera Orchestra. He was Professor of double-bass at the Vienna Conservatory from 1869 to 1910. His pupils include many of the leading bassists of his time such as Ludwig Manoly, who moved to New York City becoming principal bass of the New York Philharmonic and was an influential teacher. The Simandl "family tree" of bass pedagogues extends for many generations. Prominent bassist/educators who can trace their lineage directly back to Simandl include Adolf Mišek, Richard Davis, Mark Dresser, Joseph Guastafeste, , Gary Karr, , Karl E. H. Seigfried, Ludwig Streicher, Bertram Turetzky, and Frederick Zimmermann. (en)
