An English translation of the Constitution states, "The official religion of Brunei Darussalam shall be the Islamic Religion: Provided that all other religions may be practised in peace and harmony by the persons professing them." The Constitution further clarifies, "“Islamic Religion” means the Islamic Religion according to the Shafeite sect [sic] of Ahlis Sunnah Waljamaah;" Despite the constitution specifying the Shafi'i madhab, positions from the other three Sunni schools of fiqh (Hanafi, Maliki and Hanbali) may be consulted if required (and approved by the Sultan).
