The name Gäu (derived from the Roman pagus - a territory ruled by a lord - or from the Alemannic gou for Gau - a region) is used primarily today for a sparsely wooded cultural landscape type, that has evolved on the South German Scarplands between the Black Forest, the Stromberg and Heuchelberg in the west and the Swabian Jura and Swabian Keuperwald Hills in the east. Because the region is further subdivided into the or , Heckengäu, and it is also referred to as die Gäue (pl).

| - Gäuplatten (Gäuské plošiny) je geomorfologická oblast v německé spolkové zemi Bádensko-Württembersko, s malým přesahem do Švýcarska. Jde o pruh vápencových plošin protažený poledníkovým směrem, který odděluje pohoří Schwarzwald a Hornorýnskou nížinu na západě od Švábské Alby a jejích podhůří na východě. Na severu je ohraničen pískovcovým Odenwaldem. Nejdůležitější řekou této oblasti je Neckar. Vápencové plošiny jsou místy zbrázděné erozními údolími řek. V nižších polohách jsou pokryté úrodnou spraší; ve vyšších, tzv. „chudých Gäuích“, spraš chybí. Nadmořská výška se nejčastěji pohybuje mezi 250 a 400 m, na jihu mezi Schwarzwaldem a Švábskou Albou však stoupá až k 900 m. (cs)
