Z počátku pracoval jako pomocný kurátor v Muzeu národních starožitností (Musée des Antiquités nationales) v Saint-Germain-en-Laye, od roku 1876 byl profesorem pravěké antropologie v Paříži. - Gabriel Louis Laurent Marie de Mortillet (ur. 29 sierpnia 1821 w Meylan, Francja - zm. 25 września 1898) - antropolog, archeolog i muzeolog,od 1876 profesor antropologii prehistorycznej. Do 1848 studiował geologię i inżynierię, potem uciekł przed do Szwajcarii i Włoch, gdzie współpracował ze szwajcarskim geologiem Eduoardem Desorem. Pracował w redakcjach kilku gazet, a po powrocie do Paryża w 1864 r. założył swoją własną. W 1876 r. Mortillet został profesorem antropologii prehistorycznej w École d'Anthropologie. (pl)

Han var biträdande intendent på museet i Saint-Germain-en-Laye i 17 år innan han blev professor i förhistorisk antropologi vid École d'anthropologie i Paris 1876. Mortillets naturvetenskapliga utbildning visade sig också på annat sätt än i hans klassifikationsmetoder.
