Gedong Kirtya library was founded in 1928 by the Dutch in what was then their colonial capital of the Lesser Sunda Islands, Singaraja, and named for the Sanskrit word 'to try'. It is in the complex of Sasana Budaya, the old palace of the Buleleng Kingdom. In its collection are lontar manuscripts (written on dried leaves of the rontal palm), prasasti (inscribed on copper plates) and manuscripts on paper in Balinese and Roman characters including documents from the colonial period (1901-1953).

Kata “kirtya” kemudian diusulkan oleh , Raja Buleleng ketika itu; kirtya berakar kata "kr", menjadi "krtya", sebuah kata dari bahasa Sanskerta yang mengandung arti "usaha" atau "jerih payah". Gedung ini terletak di kompleks , yang merupakan istana tua kerajaan Buleleng. Museum ini memiliki luas lahan 300 meter persegi. (in)

Di perpustakaan ini, terdapat ribuan koleksi manuskrip daun lontar, prasasti, manuskrip kertas dalam bahasa Bali dan huruf Romawi termasuk dokumen-dokumen dari (1901-1953) yang tersimpan rapi dalam kotak yang disebut keropak yang panjangnya sekitar 60 centimeter. Semua tersusun rapi berdasarkan kelompok atau klasifikasi. Barisan paling atas Lontar Sasak, isinya tentang budaya Sasak. Kemudian Matrastawa (mantra/puja/weda), Niticastra (etik), Wariga (astronomi dan astrologi), Tutur (petuah), Usadha (pengobatan tradisional), Geguritan (kidung), Babad Pamancangah (sejarah), Satua (cerita rakyat). Semua lontar berbahasa Jawa kuno dan Sanskerta. Hanya dalam Lontar Satua menggunakan bahasa Bali. Museum ini sebelumnya dikenal dengan nama "Kirtya Liefrinck Van der Tuuk" mengacu pada , seorang sejarawan yang meneliti budaya Bali dan Nias serta Herman Neubronner van der Tuuk, seorang asistan resident pemerintah Belanda di Bali yang juga sangat tertarik dengan kebudayaan Bali dan Lombok.
