Tento společenský pes je stále živý, velice ostražitý, hravý, mimořádně učenlivý a proto snadno vychovatelný. La plus petite taille, le spitz nain est plus connue sous le nom de loulou de Poméranie ou poméranien. La plus grande, qui accepte l'unique couleur gris-loup est appelée spitz-loup ou keeshond. L'ensemble des spitz allemands partagent les mêmes caractéristiques physiques : de petites oreilles pointues et dressées, ainsi que par une queue fièrement dressée « en trompette » au-dessus de leur arrière-train. La vecchia classificazione di origine come diretto discendente del Canis familiaris palustris rutimeyer, che sarebbe vissuto nelle torbiere nell'Età della pietra, è del tutto errata, discendendo appunto il cane dal Canis lupus e non da Canis familiaris, inesistente in natura. I nomi tedeschi delle diverse varietà sono: Wolfspitz (gigante), Grossspizt (grande), Mittelspitz (medio), Kleinspitz (piccolo) e Deutscher Zwergspitz (nano). (it)
