- U 490 war ein deutsches U-Boot vom Typ XIV, das im Zweiten Weltkrieg von der Kriegsmarine eingesetzt wurde. Das Boot war eine sogenannte „Milchkuh“ und sollte ausschließlich als Versorgungsboot eingesetzt werden. Es ging auf dem ersten Einsatz verloren, ohne ein U-Boot versorgt zu haben. Alle 60 Besatzungsmitglieder gerieten in US-amerikanische Kriegsgefangenschaft. (de)

Her keel was laid down on 21 February 1942, by Germaniawerft of Kiel as yard number 559. She was launched on 24 December 1942 and commissioned on 27 March 1943, with Leutnant zur See Wilhelm Gerlach in command. He remained in command throughout the boat's short career. The U-boat's service life commenced with the 4th U-boat Flotilla from 27 March 1943 until 31 March 1944 for training. She then served, for operations, with the 12th flotilla. (en)

O submarino do tipo "vaca leiteira" era um barco de abastecimento, e participou de apenas uma patrulha. O U-490 partiu da base de Kiel em 4 de maio de 1944, em 12 de Junho, após uma viagem de 39 dias foi afundado no Atlântico Norte, em uma posição a noroeste dos Açores. (pt)
