Gingivoplasty is the process by which the gingiva are reshaped to correct deformities. Gingivoplasty is similar to gingivectomy but with a different objective. This is a procedure performed to eliminate periodontal pockets along with the reshaping as part of the technique. This procedure is followed to create physiological gingival contours with the sole purpose of recontouring the gingiva in the absence of the pockets. Such deformities include the following:-

- La gingivoplastie désigne le traitement chirurgical de l’os (mandibule, maxillaire) ou de la gencive lorsqu'ils sont abimés, nécrosés ou déformés. Le premier geste le plus courant est celui de la mise à nu de l'os par la découpe de l'excès de tissu de gencive sur les maxillaires; En France ce geste est appris en école dentaire. La découpe du tissu mou lors d'une gingivite se fait avec une découpe électrique au laser. Les chondromes qui ont pu se développer sur l'os s'il est malade sont "raclés" avec un fil abrasif de curetage. (fr)

The technique resembles that of the festooning of an artificial denture, which consists of tapering the gingival margin, creating a scalloped marginal outline, thinning the attached gingiva, creating the vertical interdental grooves and shaping the interdental papillae.
