Deze Middenring (in het Frans: Grande Ceinture) bevindt zich deels tussen de Grote Ring (R0), die het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest voor een groot stuk omringt en de Kleine Ring, die de vroegere stadsomwalling van de stad Brussel volgt. | - The Greater Ring or Intermediate Ring in Brussels, Belgium (French: Moyenne Ceinture, Dutch: Middenring) is a set of roads in the shape of a ring, intermediate between the Small Ring and the main Brussels Ring motorway. The greater part of this set of roads is numbered R21 and is about 30 km long, compared to 8 km for the Small Ring and 80 km for the main Ring. It crosses two highways (A12 and E40-east) and offers a connection to the A10/E40-west at Basilique/Basiliek via Avenue Charles Quint/Keizer Karellaan, to the A12 at Gros Tilleul/Dikke Linde, to the E19-north and N22/A201 at Leopold III via Boulevard Léopold III/Leopold III-laan, to the A3/E40-east at Reyers, to the E411 at Arsena(a)l via Boulevard du Triomphe/Triomflaan and to the E19-south at Paepsem via Boulevard Industriel/Industrielaan. This road passes through tunnels (Boileau tunnel, Montgomery tunnel, Georges Henri tunnel), on bridges and viaducts (e.g. Diamant viaduct, Teichmann bridge and Van Praet bridge) and under bridges and viaducts (e.g. Luttre bridge). Among those bridges, 7 are used to cross railroads and 2 are used to cross the Brussels–Scheldt Maritime Canal. Tunnels and the Diamant viaduct are used to avoid crossroads. The Greater Ring runs along many parks: the , the Josaphat park, the Forest park, the Astrid park, the , the , the and the . It also crosses the Bois de la Cambre. The road goes through 14 municipalities out of the 19 which form the Brussels Capital Region: City of Brussels, Schaerbeek, Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, Etterbeek, Ixelles, Uccle, Forest, Saint-Gilles (only when riding clockwise), Anderlecht, Sint-Jans-Molenbeek, Koekelberg, Ganshoren and Jette. Elle ne doit pas être confondue avec le « Grand Ring » (R0), ou Ring de Bruxelles, dont le nom est la traduction littéraire du néerlandais "Grote-Ring", ce qui crée une confusion entre les deux axes routiers (elles sont l’équivalent du périphérique et des boulevards extérieurs de Paris). La Grande Ceinture forme un immense cercle surplombant les communes composant le centre de la ville, servant de petite voie expresse pour le déplacement d'une grande nationale à une autre, pour entrer dans le centre-ville ou pour se diriger vers le Ring de façon directe. La Grande Ceinture est une infrastructure majeure de Bruxelles puisqu'elle joue le rôle de boulevard périphérique urbain, la Petite Ceinture étant située en pleine ville et le Ring passant, dans les faits, en banlieue. Mais sa discontinuité au sud et au nord, ainsi que l'inégalité de ses aménagements (voie rapide ou boulevard classique) fait que ce rôle est mal reconnu, bien qu'une signalétique particulière lui soit appliquée. Deze Middenring (in het Frans: Grande Ceinture) bevindt zich deels tussen de Grote Ring (R0), die het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest voor een groot stuk omringt en de Kleine Ring, die de vroegere stadsomwalling van de stad Brussel volgt. In het oosten van het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest ligt tussen de R21 en de R0 ook nog de Tweede Ring (R22). De R21 zelf vormt ongeveer een halve cirkel ten oosten van het Brusselse centrum, en verbindt de kruispunten Van Praet in het noorden met Ter Kameren in het zuiden. Het is een drukke en brede verkeersweg, bestaande uit 2 à 3 rijstroken in beide richtingen, maar geen autosnelweg: op sommige punten zijn ongelijkvloerse kruisingen met op- en afritten gemaakt, maar de meeste kruisingen zijn gelijkvloers met verkeerslichten. De volledige Middenring komt tot stand door daar andere verbindingswegen aan toe te voegen. Ook dit zijn brede lanen met twee rijstroken in beide richtingen, maar zonder ongelijkvoerse kruisingen:
* de verbinding van Dikke Linde (in het Park van Laken) naar Prins van Luik (aan de Ninoofsesteenweg)
* de Paepsemlaan (in Anderlecht)
* de verbinding van het Albertplein in Vorst met Ter Kameren. Deze lanen zijn echter geen verlengden van elkaar of van de R21, maar zijn met elkaar verbonden via kortere of langere verbindingswegen. Er is dus enige fantasie nodig om in het geheel een ringweg te zien. (nl)
