A gremiale, sometimes anglicized as gremial, is a square or oblong cloth or apron which a Roman Catholic bishop wears over his lap during certain liturgical ceremonies, in order to protect his vestments (especially the chasuble). The use of the gremiale is prescribed by the "Cæremoniale Episcoporum" and (historically) by the "Pontificale", which contain rubrics for the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church. It is used by the bishop on the following occasions:

| - Das Gremiale (von lateinisch gremium „Schoß“) ist eine Schürze in der Form eines quadratischen, etwa 80 × 80 cm großen Tuches. Es wird vom Bischof getragen und dient dem Schutz der liturgischen Gewänder, vor allem bei der Salbung mit den heiligen Ölen. Wegen seiner manchmal kostbaren Ausstattung diente das Gremiale jedoch auch dem rituellen Schmuck des Bischofs. Gremialien sind seit dem Ende des 13. Jahrhunderts nachgewiesen und wurden damals auch von Priester beim Hochamt getragen. Bis zur Liturgiereform nach dem Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzil wurde dem Bischof das Gremiale vom Diakon über den Schoß gelegt, wenn er beim Pontifikalamt auf der Kathedra Platz nahm. Dieses Gremiale musste aus Seide bestehen. Ein Gremiale aus Leinen trug der Bischof zu folgenden Anlässen:
* bei der Salbung des Kopfs und der Hände bei der Priesterweihe oder bei der Bischofsweihe
* bei Katechumenensalbungen, Taufen und Firmungen
* bei der Spendung des Aschenkreuzes am Aschermittwoch
* zur Fußwaschung in der Feier vom letzten Abendmahl
* bei der Weihe eines neuen Altars
* bei der Kirchweihe (de)

Ve vrcholném středověku jej používali také kněží a jeho užívání se posunulo z čistě praktické do symbolické roviny, takže až do liturgické reformy po druhém vatikánském koncilu byl většinou zhotovován z hedvábí (bez šňůrek) v příslušné liturgické barvě a velmi bohatě zdoben; při pontifikální mši se pokládal biskupovi na kolena při delším a býval také nesen ve vstupním průvodu před evangeliářem. The Roman Ordo of Gaetano Stefaneschi (c. 1311) mention it first (n. 48); soon after it is mentioned in the statutes of John Grandisson of Exeter as early as 1339, In earlier times it was used not only any bishop but also by priests.
