Je považován za jednu z nejvýznamnějších postav řecké populární hudby. Bithikotsis se narodil do chudé rodiny. Byl nejmladším z osmi sourozenců. O hudbu se začal zajímat v raném věku a brzy se naučil hrát na buzuki. Nejprve si však musel nástroj schovávat u kamaráda a cvičit v tajnosti, protože jeho otec nesouhlasil s novým stylem rembetiko, který zaujal jeho syna. Jinak pracoval jako instalatér. (cs)

Bithikotsis creció jugando buzuki en un barrio pobre de Atenas. Su familia tenía pocos recursos y muchas boca que alimentar. En la década de 1950, logró en Grecia una enorme popularidad con el canto laiko, un estilo refinado de rebético. (es)

Il est considéré comme l'un des plus grands chanteurs et paroliers de la musique grecque. Il commence à jouer du bouzouki très tôt, en cachette car son père n'appréciait pas le rebetiko. En 1959, il rencontre Míkis Theodorákis. Ils vont alors collaborer pour produire des chansons qui restent encore très populaires aujourd'hui. Bithikotisis participe à la création d'un nouveau genre musical grec, qui a suivi le rebetiko, le laïkó. (fr)
