The University of Heidelberg's Heidelberg Center for American Studies (HCA) is a higher education and research center. It was founded in 2004, making it the newest institute of Germany's oldest university. The Heidelberg Center for American Studies opened its first office in the spring of 2003. By October 2004, HCA was officially inaugurated. In the summer of 2006 the HCA moved into its present offices located in a historic building in the old city center of Heidelberg- Curt und Heidemarie Engelhorn Palais, Hauptstraße 120, 69117 Heidelberg. The institute is funded through public and private financial partnership. The founding director and former director of the institute is Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Detlef Junker. Seinen Sitz hat es im Curt und Heidemarie Engelhorn Palais an der Hauptstraße (früher Wissenschaftliches Gästehaus). Es wurde am 1. Mai 2003 auf Initiative des Historikers Detlef Junker gegründet, der seither als Gründungsdirektor das Institut leitet. Zu einem Leitungsgremium wird außerdem von jeder der sechs am HCA beteiligten Fakultäten (Die Philosophische, die Theologische und die Juristische Fakultät, die Fakultäten für Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften, für Chemie und Geowissenschaften sowie die Neuphilologische Fakultät) ein Professor auf sechs Jahre in ein Direktorium entsandt. Das Direktorium wählt aus seiner Mitte den Direktor und seine beiden Stellvertreter. Die bereits seit langem gewachsenen Beziehungen zwischen der Stadt Heidelberg und den USA sollen eine interdisziplinäre und interkulturelle Kooperation über den Atlantik hinweg noch weiter stärken. Through public lectures, debates, exhibitions, and panel discussions, the institute educates and provides the public with credible insight on the United States as a nation, and an important transatlantic partner. The Center facilitates discussions between academia and the public, creates and strengthens transatlantic networks. The HCA offers B.A., M.A., and Ph.D programs in American studies. Students are competitively selected, receive first class education and are mentored by highly qualified professors/scholars. (en)
