Hemimastigophora is a group of single-celled eukaryotic organisms with a single family, Spironemidae, first identified in 1988. Over the next 30 years, different authors proposed placing these organisms in various branches of the eukaryotes. In 2018 Lax et al. reported the first genetic information for Spironemidae, and suggest that they are from an ancient lineage of eukaryotes which constitute a separate clade from all other eukaryotic kingdoms. It is potentially related to the Telonemia.

Wyróżnienie taksonu zaproponowano w 1988 na podstawie odkrycia protista glebowego . Ze względu na jego odrębność od znanych wówczas organizmów z wyjątkiem , oprócz wyróżnienia nowego gatunku, zaproponowano wówczas utworzenie dla tych gatunków odrębnego rzędu Hemimastigida, gromady Hemimastigea i typu Hemimastigophora. Typ ten miał pozycję incertae sedis w królestwie Protista. Ponieważ zawiera tylko jedną rodzinę – , czasem jest traktowany jako jej synonim. Po odkryciu kolejnych gatunków z rodzaju i dalsze analizy molekularne potwierdzają odrębność tej linii równoważną supergrupie. Według jednej z nich Hemimastigophora są kladem siostrzanym dla kladu (obejmującego m.in. supergrupy Sar, rośliny czy ). Analiza genomów jego przedstawicieli sugeruje, że klad ten oddzielił się od pozostałych na wczesnym etapie różnicowania się eukariontów. (pl)
