Beginning in the 20th century with writers such as Lucien Febvre and Peter Gay, an expanding range of methodological approaches is being applied.

- L'histoire des émotions est un nouveau courant historiographique développé ces dernières années dans la recherche historique anglo-saxonne, allemande et française. Ce courant connait une lente ascension durant tout le XXe siècle mais prend véritablement son envol au début des années 2000. Il découle des recherches menées en France au début du XXe siècle, notamment par un de ses précurseurs, Lucien Febvre, fondateur de l’École des annales. L'histoire des émotions se définit comme l'étude des attitudes, des conduites et des comportements à un moment donné. Elle comprend également la manière dont les institutions encouragent ces comportements dans les relations avec les membres de la société ou d'un groupe. (fr)
