- The Cook Islands are named after Captain James Cook, who visited the islands in 1773 and 1777, although Spanish navigator Alvaro de Mendaña was the first European to reach the islands in 1595. The Cook Islands became aligned to the United Kingdom in 1890, largely because of the fear of British residents that France might occupy the islands as it already had Tahiti. By 1900, the islands were annexed as British territory. In 1901, the islands were included within the boundaries of the Colony of New Zealand. (en)

- L'histoire des îles Cook s'étend de sa colonisation par les Polynésiens à nos jours. Ces îles doivent leur nom au capitaine James Cook. D'abord protectorat britannique, les îles Cook sont ensuite administrées par la Nouvelle-Zélande. Devenues indépendantes en 1965, la population décide quand même de maintenir les liens avec la Nouvelle-Zélande à travers une libre-association avec cette dernière.Les îles Cook sont un archipel de 15 îles, réparties sur une vaste zone du Pacifique Sud. La majorité des îles du Groupe Nord sont des atolls coralliens alors que le Groupe Sud contient davantage d'atolls surélevés et même une île volcanique, Rarotonga, cette dernière regroupant depuis l'arrivée des Européens l'administration centrale des îles. Nel XIV secolo grandi vaka (canoe) per traversate oceaniche partirono da Rarotonga alla volta di Aotearoa (Nuova Zelanda): i coloni sono quindi gli antenati degli attuali maori della Nuova Zelanda.
