The Inter-American Democratic Charter was adopted on 11 September 2001 by a special session of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States, held in Lima, Peru. It is an inter-American instrument with the central aim of strengthening and upholding democratic institutions in the nations of the Americas. The Charter, which is binding on all 34 of the currently active OAS member states, spells out what democracy entails and specifies how it should be defended when it is under threat.

- La Carta Democrática Interamericana es un instrumento para prevalecer la institucionalidad democrática entre los países americanos firmantes. Fue aprobada el 11 de septiembre de 2001, en sesión especial de la Asamblea de la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA) en Lima (Perú) que basó en el caso de la reelección de Alberto Fujimori, y fue propuesta por Diego García-Sayán. Esta es recurrente, 10 veces por al menos las dos primeras décadas, cuando se rompe o altera el orden democrático del país firmante y constituye «un obstáculo insuperable» para la participación de su gobierno en las diversas instancias de la OEA.
