Eritrea was a colonial ship of the Italian Regia Marina constructed in the Castellammare Shipyards near Napoli. Construction started in 1935 and she was commissioned in 1937. She served mainly in the Indian and western Pacific Oceans.

Employée comme unité de garnison coloniale, elle participe à la Seconde Guerre mondiale en opérant principalement sur le théâtre de guerre de l'océan Indien. Après la guerre, selon les dispositions du traité de paix, il est cédé à la France et entre au service de la Marine nationale sous le nom de Francis Garnier (F730), participant ainsi aux événements de la guerre d'Indochine. Déclassé en 1966, le navire est utilisé comme cible pour un essai nucléaire et a coulé la même année. Impiegata in funzioni di unità di presidio coloniale, prese parte alla Seconda guerra mondiale operando principalmente nel teatro bellico dell'oceano Indiano. Dopo la guerra, per effetto delle disposizioni del trattato di pace, fu ceduta alla Francia entrando in servizio nella Marine nationale con il nome di Francis Garnier, partecipando quindi agli eventi della Guerra d'Indocina.
