Bei den Leichtathletik-Juniorenweltmeisterschaften 2010 gewann er im Alter von gerade 15 Jahren und 213 Tagen, die Goldmedaille im Kugelstoßen. Damit übertraf er Usain Bolt, welcher 2002 bei seinem Sieg über 200 m 15 Jahre und 332 Tage alt war. Gill ging damit als jüngster Junioren-Weltmeister in die Leichtathletikgeschichte ein. 2012 verteidigte er erfolgreich seinen Titel. (de)

In 2010, he won gold in the shot put at the World Junior Championships at the age of 15 years, 213 days, which made him the youngest ever male gold medalist at the World Junior Championships (surpassing Usain Bolt who was 15 years, 332 days old when he won the 200 metres in 2002). Podczas mistrzostw świata juniorów w Moncton (w lipcu 2010) w konkursie pchnięcia kulą 15-letni Gill pokonał starszych rywali, wywalczył złoty medal i wynikiem 20,76 ustanowił najlepszy wynik w sezonie wśród juniorów oraz został najmłodszym w historii mistrzem globu juniorów.
