James Albert Bonsack (October 9, 1859, – June 1, 1924) was an American inventor who developed an early cigarette rolling machine in 1880, and patented it the following year.

Bonsack a relevé le défi, mais son premier prototype a été détruit par un incendie. Il le reconstruit et dépose un brevet en septembre 1880. Sa machine permettait de produire 200 cigarettes par minute, soit 120 000 par jour, ce qui a révolutionné l'industrie du tabac, et donna un quasi-monopole à l' (en) et à son propriétaire l'industriel James Buchanan Duke.
