James Ingo Freed (June 23, 1930 – December 15, 2005) was an American architect born in Essen, Germany during the Weimar Republic. After coming to the United States at age nine with his sister Betty, followed later by their parents, he studied at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he graduated with a degree in architecture.

Freed immigreerde als negenjarige met zijn zus en ouders in de Verenigde Staten, vluchtend uit Nazi-Duitsland. Hij groeide op in Chicago en studeerde architectuur aan het Illinois Institute of Technology. Als startend architect werkte hij in Chicago en New York, waarbij hij ook enige tijd in dienst was bij Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. In 1956 vervoegde hij I. M. Pei, Henry N. Cobb en Eason H. Leonard in het New Yorks architectenbureau Pei Cobb Freed & Partners, toen nog onder de naam I. M. Pei & Associates. Wraz z rodzicami wyjechał w 1940 do Stanów Zjednoczonych, chroniąc się przed prześladowaniami hitlerowskimi. Studiował architekturę w Illinois Institute of Technology. Pracował w Chicago i Nowym Jorku, m.in. z Miesem van der Rohem. W 1956 podjął stałą współpracę z Ieoh Mingiem Peiem, w jego firmie I.M. Pei & Partners, przemianowanej w 1989 na Pei Cobb Freed & Partners (obok Freeda wymieniono w nazwie Henry'ego Cobba). Zajmował się pracą pedagogiczną, wykładał m.in. w Illinois Institute of Technology (był dziekanem Szkoły Architektury w latach 1975-1978), w niepublicznej szkole Cooper Union w Nowym Jorku, na uniw (pl)
