Jane F. Gardner is a Roman historian, academic, and museum curator. She is emerita professor of Roman History at University of Reading, specialising in Roman law and Roman social history. She was a professor at the university from 1993 until her retirement in 1999, having taught there since 1963. She was curator of the Ure Museum of Greek Archaeology from 1976 to 1992.

Von 1998 bis 2001 nahm sie eine Spezialprofessur an der University of Nottingham wahr, wo sie mit ihrem Kollegen Thomas Wiedemann das epochenübergreifende International Centre for the History of Slavery mit aufbaute, das heutige Institute for the Study of Slavery (ISOS). Mit zwei viel beachteten Quellensammlungen versuchte sie, die Antike Welt auch für die Nichtfachleute zu erschließen. Auch als Übersetzerin trat Gardner hervor. Ihre Übersetzungen bei Penguin Books von Caesars Bellum Gallicum (The Conquest of Gaul, 1983) und De bello civili (1976) werden weiter aufgelegt. Am Ure Museum of Greek Archaeology der Universität Reading war Gardner lange Zeit Kuratorin und Leihgeberin für Sonderausstellungen. (de)
