John Blankenstein (12 February 1949 in De Bilt – 25 August 2006 in The Hague) was a Dutch football referee and gay rights activist. He was notable for being one of the first homosexual athletes to come out in the Netherlands.

Il débuta en tant qu'arbitre amateur de 1966 à 1979, année où il officia en première division néerlandaise. En 1985, il reçut son accréditation internationale et mit fin à sa carrière d'arbitre en 1996. Il fut l'un des premiers aux Pays-Bas à avoir affiché clairement son homosexualité et mena des combats contre la discrimination des personnes homosexuelles. Na beëindiging van zijn actieve scheidsrechtersloopbaan in 1996 werd Blankenstein hoofd scheidsrechterszaken betaald voetbal voor de KNVB, waardoor hij nog geregeld in het nieuws kwam. Als openlijk homoseksuele voetbalscheidsrechter liet Blankenstein ook op het gebied van de emancipatie van homoseksuelen van zich horen, onder meer als mede-oprichter en woordvoerder van de Homo LesBische Federatie Nederland. (nl) John Blankenstein (De Bilt, 12 de febrero de 1949 – La Haya, 25 de agosto de 2006) fue un árbitro de fútbol neerlandés, conocido por ser uno de los primeros atletas homosexuales en salir del armario en los Países Bajos. Tras jugar como amateur, arbitró juegos de 1966 a 1995, al nivel más alto de la FIFA. Los momentos más importantes de su carrera fueron la final de la Copa de la UEFA en 1993 y estar entre los árbitros elegidos para la Eurocopa de 1992. Blankenstein estuvo activo en varias ONG que luchaban en contra de la discriminación y permaneció como una celebridad en los Países Bajos. (es)
