John Cootes (born 19 August 1941), nicknamed "the footballing priest", is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1960s and 1970s, and Roman Catholic priest. An Australia international representative three-quarter back and adept goal-kicker, he played club football in the Newcastle Rugby League for Western Suburbs during the 1960s and also later worked as a television commentator and presenter. In 1967 he commenced playing in the Newcastle Rugby League for Western Suburbs. He was named at centre in West Rosellas RLFC's team of the century.

  • John Cootes, né le 25 octobre 1944, est un ancien joueur de rugby à XIII australien évoluant au poste de centre ou d'ailier dans les années 1960 et 1970, il a été également un prêtre catholique. Après sa carrière sportive, il exerce comme présentateur télévisuel et commentateur. Il grandit à Newcastle en Australie et découvre le rugby à XIII sous les ordres de Clive Churchill. Il poursuit des études en théologie à la Congrégation pour l'évangélisation des peuples et joue alors au rugby à XV à la Lazio en Italie. Il rejoint en 1967 les en Championnat de Newcastle dans lequel il remporte le titre en 1970.
