Joseph Smith (c. 1682 – Venice, 6 November 1770), often known as Consul Smith, was the British consul at Venice from 1744 to 1760. He was a patron of artists, most notably Canaletto, a collector and connoisseur, banker to the British community at Venice, and a major draw on the British Grand Tour. His collection of drawings was bought for George III of Great Britain and forms a nucleus of the Royal Collection of drawings in the Print Room at Windsor Castle.

(ru) Joseph Smith (geboren etwa 1674 (oder 1682) in England; gestorben 6. November 1770 in Venedig), Konsul in der Republik Venedig, war ein britischer Kaufmann, Kunstsammler, -kenner und -förderer in Venedig. Er ist auch unter Bezeichnung Consul Smith bekannt, obwohl er dazu nach jahrelangen Bemühungen seit 1716 und Vakanz des Amtes seit 1736 erst 1744 ernannt wurde. 1760 zog er sich aus diesem Amt wieder zurück. Neben Handels- und Versicherungsgeschäften gehörte ihm ein Verlag, der unter dem Namen des Druckers Giovanni Battista Pasquali firmierte, und die Buchhandlung Felicità delle Lettere am Campo S. Bartolomeo. Sein Hauptinteresse galt aber der Kunst. Er beriet britische Venedigbesucher und förderte u. a. den Maler, Kupferstecher und Architekten Antonio Visentini, die Malerin Rosalba Carri (de) Joseph Smith (Londres, 1674 - Venise, 1770), est consul anglais à Venise entre 1744 et 1760. Il est un collectionneur passionné, mécène intéressé, interlocuteur entre les Anglais désireux d'acquérir des peintures italiennes et les artistes submergés de commandes. Il devient le protecteur de Francesco Zuccarelli et lui fait faire un grand nombre de tableaux, lesquels sont envoyés à Londres et vendus à des prix élevés. Il est, de même, le mécène, intermédiaire et agent de Canaletto, qu'il fait d'ailleurs venir à Londres et dont il finance l'album de gravures dévolues à Venise. (fr)
