Nel 1928, a 44 anni, pubblica Pflanzensoziologie un trattato essenziale che trasforma la scuola franco-svizzera di Zurigo-Montpellier nella più importante in questo settore. Estudià com afeccionat la flora dels Alps. La qualitat del seu treball va fer que, gràcies a , obtingués un lloc de treball com a « Privatdozent » a l'Escola politècnica federal de Zurich. Aviat però marxà a França, establint-se a Montpellier on va trobar Gabrielle Blanquet, que esdevindria la seva esposa; ell uniria el seu cognom al d'ella signant en endavant els seus treballs com « Josias Braun-Blanquet ». Stworzył hierarchiczny system jednostek fitosocjologicznych (syntaksonów), w którym podstawową jednostką jest Zespół roślinności reprezentowany w przyrodzie przez konkretne płaty roślinne, czyli fitocenozy. Przy wyróżnianiu zespołów oparł się na kryterium florystycznym, tworząc koncepcję gatunków charakterystycznych. (pl)

Hij is de vormgever van de Braun-Blanquet-methode, die in de vegetatiekunde onder de van het vegetatieonderzoek valt, die onder andere in Nederland van doorslaggevende betekenis is geworden. De benaming Frans-Zwitserse school verwijst niet naar het feit dat Braun-Blanquet als Zwitser in Frankrijk zijn instituut had, maar naar de belangrijkste inspiratoren van de methode: de Zwitser Schröter en de Fransman Flahault.
