K-204 closely follows a section of the former Pikes Peak Ocean to Ocean Highway. The Kansas State Highway Commission, now known as the Kansas Department of Transportation, first designated K-204 as a state highway on August 13, 1958. The highway replaced a former alignment of US-36 that was decommissioned in 1952. (en)
