A mythic cultural hero who had invented much of Luba culture, Kalala is the first sacred King of the Kingdom of Luba and its most revered son. Durante una ceremonia en la corte, Kalala Ilunga y el resto de los príncipes reales debían bailar ante el rey. En la sala de baile se había cavado un agujero con lanzas y fetiches para que cayera. Known as "The Warrior" and regarded as the most famous of Luba Kings for having been able to praise himself for his future exploits the same day he was born, Kalala Ilunga was the eldest son of Ilunga Mbili and nephew of King Kongolo Mwamba. From a young age, Kalala is an attractive option by his capacity warrior (like his father), his intelligence, powerful presence as well as his spiritual and mystical gifts. Kongolo, on the other hand, already old and worried for his offspring and his empire ambitions and fearing revenge against Ilunga Mbili, will organize a plot to eliminate Kalala as well. Dans le couloir de danse on avait creusé un trou dans lequel on y avait dissimulé des lances et des fétiches de telle sorte que Kalala Ilunga puissent y tomber et mourir. Heureusement, les prêtres Mbudie eurent échos du piège et l’alertèrent. Lors de la cérémonie, Kalala Ilunga effectua sa danse avec prudence en évitant le piège. Le coup manqué, Kongolo organisera un autre complot avec la complicité de quelques soldats. Il était prévu que les guerriers abattent Kalala Ilunga sur le champ de bataille. Quand la mutinerie éclata, les fidèles de Kalala Ilunga le protégèrent et sortirent victorieux. Pensant que la victoire lui était acquise, Kongolo se rendit sur le champ de bataille pour y trouver Kalala Ilunga vivant et soutenu par les soldats. Kalala Ilunga le pourchassa, le rattrapa et le tua. Il prit soin de prendre sa tête et ses organes génitaux avec lesquels il rentra à la capitale Mwibele. En les exposant au peuple et à la cour, il fut aussitôt proclamé Roi des rois, (empereur en Tshiluba). L’empire Luba fut prospère et grand jusqu’à sa mort. Son fils le succéda, mais ne put garder l’empire intact.
