The Kandu or Kanu or Halwai are a Hindu Bania caste in India. The community was traditionally engaged in the sale of "foodstuffs and sundry eats". They are entitled as OBC in Central Government and EBC in Bihar.The Kanu are a Hindu caste in India, Bangladesh and Nepal. They traditionally provided parched grains and are one of the Bania castes in the Vaishya Varna. In Bihar, Kanu often use Gupta as a surname. Saints from this community include Sant Paltu Prasad from Nagpurjalalpur (near Ayodhya), who composed the Bhajnavali .
