The first icebreaker Krassin, or Krasin, (Russian: Красин) was built for the Imperial Russian Navy as Svyatogor. She had a long, distinguished career in rescue operations, as well as a pathfinder and explorer of the Northern Sea Route. She has been fully restored to operating condition and is now a museum ship in Saint Petersburg.

Lors de la construction en Angleterre le suivi de chantier était assuré par un ingénieur nommé Evgueni Zamyatine, devenu célèbre comme écrivain de science fiction (Le roman dystopique Nous Autres ). V roce 1927 byl přejmenován na památku bolševického politika Leonida Krasina. Proslavil se především záchranou posádky ztroskotané vzducholodi Italia. Loď postavila na objednávku ruského carského námořnictva firma Armstrong Whitworth v Newcastle upon Tyne. Jednalo se o další objednávku ledoborce u stejné firmy, po nákupu stroje Jermak. Na vodu byla loď spuštěna 3. srpna 1916. Dnes je Krasin ukotven v Sankt Petěrburgu, kde slouží jako plovoucí muzeum.
