Der Name geht auf ein riesiges Seeungeheuer der biblischen Mythologie zurück. Der Beobachter stand in einer Höhe von bis zu 18 m über Grund auf einer brückenartigen Galerie. Von 1874 bis 1878 benutzte Dreyer das Teleskop. Auch er konnte eine Reihe nichtstellarer Objekte entdecken und fremde Beobachtungen verifizieren. Damit legte er die Basis für den New General Catalogue (NGC), der 1888 veröffentlicht wurde. (de)
