La définition de Pineau et Le Grand (2013) semble suffisamment large pour tenir compte de toutes ces pratiques : l'histoire de vie est une "recherche et [une] construction de sens à partir de faits temporels personnels, elle engage un processus d'expression de l'expérience". Les auteurs expliquent que l'histoire de vie permet de donner la parole à des entités qui n'ont pas toujours l'occasion de s'exprimer.
