| - Eine Kathedrale ist eine Kirche mit Bischofssitz. Sie ist die Hauptkirche eines Bistums (kirchlicher Verwaltungsbezirk). Aus Gründen der britischen Kirchengeschichte gehören vor 1800 gebaute Kirchen im Vereinigten Königreich so gut wie immer einer anglikanischen Kirche: der Church of England, der – presbyterianischen – Church of Scotland (aber nicht der ebenfalls anglikanischen Scottish Episcopal Church), der Church in Wales bzw. der Church of Ireland. Frühmittelalterliche Kirchenbauten sind auf den britischen Inseln angelsächsisch oder iroschottisch. Darauf folgte ab 1066 der normannische Baustil – statt der kontinentalen Romanik. Die gotische Bauweise (Perpendicular Style) wurde hier am Ende des Mittelalters nie ganz aufgegeben, so dass es einen fließenden Übergang von der Spätgotik zur Neugotik gab. Seit dem 17. Jahrhundert wurden in dem Inselreich also sowohl gotische als auch barocke Kirchen gebaut. (de)
