Lovers' Vows (1798), a play by Elizabeth Inchbald arguably best known now for having been featured in Jane Austen's novel Mansfield Park (1814), is one of at least four adaptations of August von Kotzebue's Das Kind der Liebe (1780; literally "Love Child," or "Natural Son," as it is often translated), all of which were published between 1798 and 1800. Inchbald's version is the only one to have been performed. Dealing as it does with sex outside marriage and illegitimate birth, Inchbald in the Preface to the published version declares herself to have been highly sensitive to the task of adapting the original German text for "an English audience." Even so, she left the setting as Germany.

La pièce est une des diverses adaptations (quatre au minimum) de Das Kind der Liebe (L'Enfant de l'amour, c'est-à-dire ici « fils naturel »), pièce d'August von Kotzebue de 1780. Toutes ces adaptations ont été publiées entre 1798 et 1800, mais la version d'Elizabeth Inchbald est la seule à avoir été jouée. Traitant comme elle le fait de relations sexuelles hors mariage et d'une naissance illégitime, Elizabeth Inchbald se déclare, dans la préface de la version publiée, avoir été très sensible au besoin d'adapter le texte allemand original à destination « d'un public anglais. » Elle laisse cependant la pièce avoir l'Allemagne pour cadre. La pièce est tout d'abord représentée à Covent Garden, le mardi 11 octobre 1798, et est un succès immédiat : elle est jouée pendant quarante-deux soirées, « en faisant d'assez loin la création la plus couronnée de succès de cette saison », avant de poursuivre ses représentations à Bristol, Newcastle, Bath et diverses autres villes. La pièce rencontre également le succès en tant qu'œuvre publiée, même si elle soulève une certaine controverse du fait de son ambiguïté morale. , qui a traduit la pièce de Kotzebue sous le titre Le Fils naturel (The Natural Son), écrit alors (de façon pas forcément entièrement désintéressée, car le succès de l'adaptation d'Elizabeth Inchbald lui interdit de mettre en scène la traduction qu'elle vient de faire), qu'Elizabeth Inchbald a transformé le personnage d'Amelia en une sorte « de garçon manqué campagnarde effrontée » (a « forward country hoyden »).
