The Lupophon (or lupophone) is an extremely rare woodwind instrument in the oboe family that plays in a lower pitch than standard, and was developed by Guntram Wolf of Kronach and Benedikt Eppelsheim of Munich, Germany, manufactured by Guntram Wolf. The instrument takes its name after the Italian translation of the inventor's surname (lupo standing for wolf), as the sarrusophone, the saxhorn, the saxophone, the heckelphone, and the rothphone are named after their inventors. It is in effect a modified heckelphone, with a slightly smaller bore and range down to low F. The lower portion of the instrument is folded back on itself in order to manage the considerable length of the tube, somewhat in the manner of a saxophone. Dank der zusätzlichen vier tiefsten Halbtöne kann das Lupophon die für Heckelphon komponierte Stimme aus Richard Strauss’ Eine Alpensinfonie spielen, die den Tonumfang des Heckelphons unterschreitet. Die erste kammermusikalische Komposition, in der das Lupophon als Soloinstrument auftritt, PLP für Lupophon und zwei Klaviere von , wurde am 15. März 2011 in Amsterdam von uraufgeführt. (de)

En efecto, es un heckelfón modificado, con un taladro ligeramente más pequeño y un rango que desciende hasta un fa grave. La parte inferior del instrumento se pliega sobre sí misma para acomodar la considerable longitud del tubo de 173 cm, a la manera de un saxofón. La adición de cuatro semitonos más graves le permite cubrir todo el rango previsto de la parte del heckelfón de la Sinfonía alpina de Richard Strauss, que desciende más allá de la nota más baja de ese instrumento. La primera composición de cámara para este instrumento en solitario, PLP para lupofón y dos pianos de Samuel Andreyev, fue estrenada por Martin Bliggenstorfer en Ámsterdam el 15 de marzo de 2011.
