Máire Rua O'Brien (1615/1616 – 1686) was an Irish aristocrat who married three times to retain family lands. Born into the MacMahon family of Thomond, her name, Máire Rua or Red Mary, derived from her red hair. First married to Daniel Neylon (O'Neillan) of Dysert O'Dea Castle in north County Clare, after his death in 1639, she married Conor O'Brien of Leamaneh Castle. With her second husband, she backed the Royalist cause against Cromwell's forces during the Eleven Years' War. However, after her second husband was killed in 1651, she married a Cromwellian officer; in a reputed attempt to save her estate. Remaining on her estate at Leamaneh for several decades, her son Donough O'Brien moved the family seat to the larger Dromoland Castle where she lived until her death in 1686. A sometimes n

  • Bean uasal a phós trí huaire chun tailte a muintire a choinneáil slán ba ea Máire Rua Ní Mhathúna agus clú uirthi mar bhean cheanntréan dhásachtach a bhí in ann an fód a sheasamh. Rugadh í i gChontae an Chláir agus phós Donnchadh Ó Nialláin ó Chaisleán an Dísirt i dtuaisceart Chontae an Chláir. Fuair sé bás in 1639 agus phós sí Conchubhar Ó Briain ó Chaisleán Léim an Eich. Thaobhaigh siad leis an Rí i gcoinne Chromail. Maraíodh an Brianach in 1651, agus phós Máire Rua oifigeach Sasanach, rud a rinne sí chun a tailte a shábháil más fíor. D’fhan sí i gCaisleán Léim an Eich ar feadh breis is scór blianta, go dtí gur aistrigh a mac Donnchadh Ó Briain an teaghlach go dtí Caisleán Dhrom Ólainn, áit ar chónaigh sí go dtí a bás in 1686. Bhí iomrá léi sa bhéaloideas mar dhuine rúndaingean teanntása (ga)
