Marcophily, occasionally called Marcophilately, is the specialised study and collection of postmarks, cancellations and postal markings applied by hand or machine on mail that passes through a postal system and applied by the postal operator through whose domain they pass. Commatology was a term used prior to World War II but is rarely used today. While strictly speaking it is not a postal history topic, it can be collected and studied as such.

Enerzijds gaat het om de afstempeling ter vernietiging van de frankering, anderzijds allerlei stempels op het poststuk die aangeven wanneer een poststuk een bepaald punt in het postaal systeem is gepasseerd (zoals doorgangsstempels en aankomststempels), door wie het is afgehandeld (bestellersstempel) en soms aanvullende instructies. Questo settore della filatelia talvolta prosegue di pari passo con la storia postale o con l'aerofilia avendo come interesse comune a questi rami del collezionismo i bolli apposti sulla corrispondenza. La funzione dell'annullo consiste nell'apporre una traccia indelebile sui francobolli per impedirne l'eventuale riuso mentre il timbro contiene le informazioni fondamentali relative alla spedizione di un oggetto tramite posta. La traccia lasciata durante l'operazione di annullamento e timbratura viene eseguita normalmente con appositi inchiostri indelebili e penetranti in modo da impedire eventuali contraffazioni. (it)

Large cities that have many post offices offer great study opportunities due to the vast range of handstamps or machine cancellations in use over any time period.
