Margi, also known as Marghi and Marghi Central, is a Chadic language (a branch of Afroasiatic) spoken in Nigeria, Cameroon, and Chad. It is perhaps the best described of the Biu–Mandara branch of that family. Marghi South language and Putai are closely related and sometimes considered dialects of Margi. There are several kinds of Marghi language, including Madube, Izge, Lassa, Gulak, Damboa, Mulgwai, Uba and Sukur. Every kind of these languages were spoken different type of the language and were from different places.

  • Das Margi, Selbstbezeichnung màrgyí, ist eine um die Stadt (auf Margi ə́zə̀gə̀), die ca. 100 km südlich von Maiduguri im Nordosten Nigerias liegt, gesprochene Sprache. Das Margi gehört zur Familie der Tschadischen Sprachen und dort zur Untergruppe der Biu-Mandara-Sprachen. Obwohl die Sprache damit ein Glied der afroasiatischen Sprachfamilie bildet, teilt sie nur noch wenige grammatische Merkmale dieser Familie, besitzt z. B. weder grammatisches Genus noch Ablaut, weshalb ihre Zugehörigkeit früher in Frage gestellt wurde. Die genetische Klassifikation des Margi stützt sich vor allem auf das Lexikon. (de)
