Martinus Nijhoff (20 April 1894, in The Hague – 26 January 1953, in The Hague) was a Dutch poet and essayist. He studied literature in Amsterdam and law in Utrecht. His debut was made in 1916 with his volume De wandelaar ("The wanderer"). From that moment he gradually expanded his reputation by his unique style of poetry: not experimental, like Paul Van Ostaijen, yet distinguished by the clarity of his language combined with mystical content. He was a literary craftsman who employed skilfully various verse forms from different literary epochs.

Nijhoff gilt als einer der niederländischen Klassiker der Moderne. Ein seit 1953 jährlich vergebener Übersetzer-Preis trägt seinen Namen. Er studierte zunächst Jura in Amsterdam, später als schon angesehener Dichter auch Literatur (Niederlandistik) in Utrecht. Als Redakteur der Zeitschrift De Gids prägte er maßgeblich das literarische Leben der Niederlande. Er war zweimal verheiratet, zuerst bis zur Scheidung 1950 mit der Romanautorin , dann bis zu seinem überraschenden Tod an Herzversagen mit der Diseuse . In der Abstimmung über die größten Niederländer aller Zeiten, die 2004 vom Fernsehsender KRO durchgeführt wurde, landete er auf Platz 1 (de)
