In Greek mythology, Melaneus (/ˈmɛlənˌjuːs/; Ancient Greek: Μελανεύς) was the founder of Oechalia (Oikhalia), variously located in Thessaly, Messenia or Euboea and also king of the Dryopes.

Später kam er nach Messenien zu Perieres, der ihm das Land beim Karnasischen Hain zuwies und die dortige Stadt nach seiner Frau Oichalia benannte. Melaneo ereditò dal padre l'abilità con l'arco, e fu il padre di Eurito (un altro noto arcere) e di Ambracia, eponima della città di Ambracia in Epiro. Secondo una versione del mito, fu lo stesso Apollo a rapire Stratonice, figlia di re Portaone d'Etolia, per offrirla in sposa al figlio.
