Il disputa principalement des courses d'endurance mais courut également avec un certain succès en Formule Junior (il a notamment emporté le Grand Prix de Monaco dans cette catégorie en 1959, sur une Stanguellini), avant de débuter en Formule 1 en 1961 au volant d'une Lotus 18. Après un accident lors des essais du Grand Prix d'Allemagne cette même année, il mit un terme à sa carrière sportive et se spécialisa dans l'ingénierie automobile. (fr)

Hij debuteerde in dit kampioenschap op 14 mei 1961. Na een crash tijdens een training voor de Grand Prix Formule 1 van Duitsland van 1961, richtte May zich op de ontwikkeling van auto's. Zo droeg hij onder andere bij aan de ontwikkeling van de injectiemotor voor Porsche en Ferrari. (nl)

He participated in three Formula One World Championship Grands Prix, debuting on 14 May 1961. He scored no championship points. After a crash during practice for the 1961 German Grand Prix, May concentrated on engineering, helping to develop a fuel injection system for Porsche and Ferrari. (en)

Alla 1000 Km del Nurburgring del 1956 portò in gara una Porsche 550 RS dotata di un alettone. Insieme al cugino Pierre girò in prova su tempi di gran lunga inferiori rispetto alle vetture ufficiali grazie alla deportanza creata dall'alettone stesso.
