Michael John Nigel Priestley ONZM (21 July 1943 – 23 December 2014) was a New Zealand earthquake engineer. He made significant contributions to the design and retrofit of concrete structures, and developed the first displacement-based method of seismic design.

Priestley besuchte 1956 bis 1959 das Wellington Technical College und studierte danach Bauingenieurwesen an der University of Canterbury, an der er 1966 promoviert wurde (Moment redistribution in prestressed concrete continuous beams). Danach leitete er bis 1975 das Structures Laboratory des Bauministeriums in Lower Hutt. 1976 wurde er Senior Lecturer und später Reader an der University of Canterbury. Dort arbeitete er mit Thomas Paulay (insbesondere bei Mauerwerk-Bauten) und über erdbebensicheres Bauen zusammen und Stahlbetonbau.
