The Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (OALD) was the first advanced learner's dictionary of English. It was first published in 1948. It is the largest English-language dictionary from Oxford University Press aimed at a non-native audience. Users with a more linguistic interest, requiring etymologies or copious references, usually prefer the Concise Oxford English Dictionary, or indeed the comprehensive Oxford English Dictionary, or other dictionaries aimed at speakers of English with native-level competence.

Sa neuvième et dernière édition date de 2015. C'est le plus ancien dictionnaire monolingue destiné aux étudiants non anglophones. Il a été conçu par un lexicographe et grammairien, (en), en collaboration avec Edward Vivian Gatenby et H. Wakefield, alors qu'ils enseignaient tous les trois au Japon. Il est publié pour la première fois à Tokyo en 1942 par Kaitakusha sous le titre The Idiomatic and Syntactic English Dictionary. Une édition internationale devait être réalisée par Oxford University Press peu après, mais la guerre, puis les restrictions de papier dans l'immédiat après-guerre, retardent sa parution. Cette édition est finalement proposée en 1948 sous le titre A Learner's (fr) Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English – słownik jednojęzyczny języka angielskiego pisany dla odbiorców niebędących ojczystymi użytkownikami języka. Jest odmienny zarówno od słownika dwujęzycznego jak również jednojęzycznego słownika pisanego dla odbiorców posługujących się językiem angielskim od urodzenia czy przygotowywanego dla środowisk akademickich. Pierwszy słownik tego typu ukazał się w 1942 roku, a jego autorem był Albert Sydney Hornby. Współczesne wydania słownika są firmowane jego nazwiskiem, choć redagowane są przez zrzeszonych w fundacji naukowców z Oxford University. Słownik wydaje oficyna Oxford University Press. Obecnie dostępne jest wydanie VIII z 2010 roku. Wydawnictwo szacuje, że ze słownika korzysta 30 milionów użytkowników. (pl)
